For me, it was a 13 hour drive to the ass-end of Texas from the other side of Texas, for a school function I wasn't really wanting to participate in. In order for me to pass the time, I had brought along my trusty cd player, yet...I left my CD binder on my bed. I asked my friend for a few CDs, and they were trance...and I'd never heard this stuff before! I was hooked from then on.

What did it for you?
Stretchy
To be honest i don't really remember what first got me started into liking trance since it was years ago.

Must of been about 90-92 when i first heard the trance style of back then but don't remember what tune.

What ever happened, i'm sure glad it did.

Thanks to some of my UK friends who were exchange students in college back in 1997...well, they had me listening to Fatboy Slim...of course, this wasn't trance but pretty much this is how my passion for electronic music got started. After experiencing with different styles I definetely felt identified with Trance Music, and here I am....a TRANCEADDICT just like you guys! Cheers.

My brother got me into trance.

I started out listening to house and breaks only.

I still like them, but trance is my number one by now.

I got an essential selection double disc mix by Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold

I liked the Slim disc and my brother like the Oakenfold disc.

I eventually just crossed over to trance.

Gald to see some people like Breakbeats around here!

I used to call trance or techno or club music so pretty bad things before I liked it, meaning before I listened to it.

Also, I hooked my first gig in my hometown since becoming a DJ (that isn't just a name decoration cool.gif )

I've been holding out, because I've had my set for a few months, but I've just now been able to buy vinyl. And before I go off to the party, i'm gonna pick up those things where you can mix with CDs.
Eugfest
I had love for dance and oldschool music for as long as i remember, going back to the early 90s. I remember sometime in 99 or 00, I was dloading music when I came upon a dream dance composition album on some ftp. It had some familiar artists on it such as Fragma and Darude, as well as some unfamiliar ones that would soon become my gods such as a guy by the name of Paul Van Dyk. After listening to the album I was hooked instantly. 'For an Angel' quickly became my favorite, and the chain reaction began. My brother always says to me that once I get older (late 20s and 30s) I will ditch trance and switch to something more adult. You know what I say to him? I started listening when I was 15, Im 19 now and still listening, and Im positive I still will be when Ill be 23, 27, 31, 35... As for when Im in my 50s, well lets just hope so. smile.gif
The Phasm
I have always been into "electronic" music (from DM to OMD or even the PSB). When I was about 12 or 13, New Beat started. As I am Belgian (u know this small country in Europe, close to France, where u american dudes buy chocolates and beers...), there was a lot of bands as Belgium was the place to be... It was for me a revolution. I remember my very first CD (New Beat Take 1) with dudes groups Snowy Red, A Split Second, etc. Nobody believed in this music at that time but as it was growing, new groups appeared and the music started to change: acid, techno, and then Trance (mainly with Sven Väth in Germany, who was far from being a reel techno dude at that time but more a trancehead...). I remember my first trance CD (R&S In Order To Dance 2) with the excellent Spectrum, Space Opera and the (still) magnificent Revelation - First Power blink.gif . That was for me the biginning of Trance and how I got into it...
Arminonly
I got interested in Trance in '98. A friend of mine gave me the cd Tiesto live at Innercity. I listen to it and got caught by the melodies and fell in love with the Orange Theme Track. Then I decided to buy one of the cd's of the Magik Serie.

And so i got interested in Trance. tongue.gif
Digital Pimp
I always had a liking for electronic music, my Dads fault. He used to listen to Jean Michel Jarre when i was young, sort of liked it. Ended up in the early 90's when i was 11 getting into Techno and Hardcore, got kind of fed up with it in the mid 90's all very cheesy. Wanted something a little more claim and grown up as opposed to the constant banging bass drum. Really memorable songs that got me into my long love affair with Trance would be Accession - Someone (Spaces Bros Dub) and Legend B - Lost in Love.
Makes me feel old now, been a good many years of pure entrancement
The Phasm

I moved to edinburgh from a small town in the north of scotland in the late 80's and discovered clubbing and house music and the legendary club "Pure" which is kinda known for being a techno institution but back in the day house was less ghetto-ised....house was house and Pure was very indicative of an attitude that played little notice to sticking to generic styles and had a diverse selection of DJ's and live performances including my first encounter with Orbital. I also encountered the Shamen's Synergy nights which were amazing and the The Shamen vs Bam Bam track "Transcendental" is the first trance track I am consciously aware of. Fini Tribe who were a band fron Edinburgh who'd started off as an experimental/industrial style sound discovered electronic dance music around that time too and played some wonderful live sets of acid house/trance style sounds. Hardfloor's "Hardtrance Acperience" and Felix's "Don't You want Me" are other notable trax that ensured I acquired an affection for trance. I still like and listen to house/techno but more 3/4 of my listening these days is what I'd call trance.

As for Eugfest's brother what is adult listening ?! Does he mean music for old people....MOP as opposed to MOR!....I've been into trance for about 13 years now and although I don't go clubbing as often as I did I still love the tunes and will always listen to trance....keep da faith!
fimoklei
it all began with Haredcore, yess harcore:). Bought some cd's. After a while i bought a double cd with one side hardcore other side it was kinda club. That was the start of buying more and more softer dance music. And now 6 years later i'm all into trance smile.gif

I used to listen to Eurodance, when it still was any good in the early nineties. And I consider the current trance to be a spinoff of that style + the old (slightly boring) trance. So when I got older, my musical taste developed away from the cheese and into the better trance.
I never listened to hardcore btw.
waho
interesting stories

i'm from canada and the scene is generally "a little behind" compared to UK, Netherlands

although i enjoy many different genres of music, i definitely like trance the best and I am thoroughly addicted

i started in the mid-90's with eurodance (cheese nowadays i guess...) and it was really in the late 90's when mp3 format became more widely popular that i "accidentally" downloaded some trance on the computer. wow the synths and melodies were euphoric and amazing. I have never looked back since. starting to like a bit of the progressive sounding trance now that i'm exposed to - maybe its a natural progression

the problem is the limited selection in getting albums/singles from the "conservative" stores in canada, but thats another story...
Jimmy
I liked dance music from the beginning off, it al started in early 90's with hardcore en eurodance. Then i heared the single of robert miles - children. I think that track envoked the trance feeling in me though it 's not real trance, but still, i had found my style. Then later on came Paul van Dyk - For an angel and so it all began for me. biggrin.gif
Jimmy
Thank god for the internet, cause without it i'd consider people like dj sammy and lasgo as the best trance producers. with tunes like heaven, sunlight etc.
Addict-In-Trance
It al started for me as a child in my early teen years (I'm 19 now smile.gif ) with Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo when I first heard a song from the dance scene
Now everyone knows them for there Happy Hardcore singles and there hardcore style of spinning
But when I first heard Pedro & Benno - Speechles I was 'Speechless' cool.gif
And when Ferry & Tiesto came with Gouryella I knew that this was my taste of music for my life
And now I see some of my friends still enjoy Milk Inc. and Boozywoozy or Jan Wayne dry.gif
Then I know that I love the greatest music genre in the world called:

TRANCE biggrin.gif
Fiction
For me its was and still is the melody, I love beautiful melodies in any type of music the best part with trance is you get layered or simple emotional melodies with a beat to dance to!! there's nothing else quite like it! smile.gif
Orange_theme
I was in 2nd or 3rd year of high school, i was grounded, so had to stay in, listened to R1 on a friday night, and heard cygnus x - orange theme, it was completely different to anything i had heard b4! It started from there, became properly engrossed in the genre around 98 though, when trance took off!
oboskeboo
back in '97 was 'bout 12 then smile.gif
I got this Cd Absoulut Music 22 a popish cd from norway, realy A-lst.

Let me think... My adventure with electronic music began in early 90's. But trance fascination began when I played something called Wip3Out. In the soundtrack there was this guy... Paul Van Dyk? [; (just kiddin', I'm "Van Dyk Addicted" [wink.gif. I was listening to this cd for few hours and I loved this soundtrack. Then I heard Van Dyk's "For An Angel" and that is where it all begun. Then was all this gigs (even now I can remeber my first gig - Mayday Polska 2000:), parties, cd's and all this stuff. And why I love trance? 'Cuz it's more melodic than techno. That's all folks [;
deekaymmm
The orange theme is kinda legendary in our household from when it appeared on the amazing FACT mix by carl Cox....second track on Cd2 preceeded by Amphetamine...what a great mix.....it always used to get played (and still does sometimes!) to get us pumped up for a night out. biggrin.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif

I can think of no better track to introduce you to the joys of trance....sweet choice.
Lance
daft punk's homework album

Before 1999 I was listening Faithless,Prodigy Dj quicksilver and sash and I didn't know trance till 1999.

In 1999 while I was watching Tv I saw Alice Deejay - Better off alone clip and I'm hooked I liked this tune so much and looked for what kind of genre is it.

When I see trance I searched for trance songs on the net and I've found Darude,D-devils,Ferry Corsten,Tiesto songs and I become a great trance fan.Milk inc was also great to especially La Vache rolleyes.gif
Blue-J
For me it started from late 80's early 90's from new wave music, then to techno, then to trance. I think its all about the melody. Techno was cool but too repetetive. Then trance came and thats where I was hooked. You can here some of the influences in new wave music in some of the trance songs.
Funtik
I began with RAVE music (trance melody with hardcore speed wink.gif ) and Happy Hardcore. When HH died i went into hard trance, then trance and now progressive with trance/house elements (the speed is slowing down as I become older cool.gif ).
Static
My brother used to listen to d'n'b for along time and he takes many cd's from his friends. One time he takes one of earlier Dream Dance compilations. I've heard ATB remix on Moby - Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad, and i like it so much that I just can't listen to another music from this moment. Then I've heard Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar! It was very good! But some years ago, when we purchased modem, I've found a prog called WinMx, u may know it, a little brother of slsk. My brother was seeking for some tunes and I've seen adress www.tranceaddict.com in one of file names, I've entered the site and get my first Ferry's live! I've heard Accadia - Into The Dawn (James Holden Remix) and Orinoko - Island (Thrilseekers Remix) and was totally destroyed by this awesome tunes. And then I was "killed" by Armin's Communication. So since 2001 I'm in trance, not too long, but...
Dragonpath
I started listening Kraftwerk a couple of years ago (lol). Yello, ELO, etc.. U get the point. Funny thing is i'm a thrash metal fan also! Love the first 4 albums of Metallica, the bay area scene, Holy terror, Whiplash etc...

So, Why do i love trance? Dunno but got hooked with the beats, the repetitive sounds with smooth growing melodies, the drama...everything.
TheVrk
basically, never liked electronic music of any kind untill 1998....
then, i heard van Dyk live at the gallery turnmills on
the essential mix and WOW!!!!! that's when my whole perspective on music changed. went from likng rap to abandoning it altogether.
trance, techno, and prog and NOTHING but nowadays - and U2.
flight_643
The God (Tiesto) got me hooked on trance, its a good addiction though. Isn't it?
noops
I guess I might be one of your older members but also one of the newest recruits to the forum (45yrs and 2 days respectively). But people have often asked me why I like trance and i've figured that i can trace it right back to the late 70s when i was into bands like Tangerine Dream - saw them play at (as it was) the Hammersmith Odeon - and one of my favourite albums Timewind by Klaus Schulze - anybody else heard that?. The use of sequencers and electronics just blew me away and it's followed me ever since. Through the 80s with bands like Depeche Mode and tracks like I feel love by Donna Summer, records that at the time 'broke the mould' (sic). The 90s were a little bereft until the latter years but although I can't remember exactly what or when got me into the current Trance Binary Finary's 1998 mix probably helped. The recent discovery (helped by Broadband) of all this online music and your forum is an absolute dream come true! Thank you to all of you who mix and upload, I've been in heaven for the past couple of days (without the use of any performance enhancing substances either).

Keep 'em coming!

It started for me in '95 / '96 with great tunes like Robert Miles' Children and Bedrock's For What You Dream Of. Then along came great tracks like Faithless - Insomnia and BBE - Seven Days and One Week, and my hunger started to grow even further.

Then in '97, everything blew up, with memorable trance such as Sundance, Lost Tribe's Gamemaster and Lucid's I Can't Help Myself being the highlights.

I've never looked back....
