Godskitchen Birthday with Above & Beyond 27th September 2008
Lineup:
Above & Beyond (4 Hours)
Jon O' Bir
Richard Durand
Mark Eteson
It has been some time since I have been to a good club night and being a big fan of the club Air I couldn't wait for Godskitchen.
We arrived at the club early, completely missing the inevitable large queue which would develop, got ourselves a drink and headed to the main room for Mark Eteson's warm up set. Eteson played a nice selection of progressive house and melodic/lower BPM trance which suited the time slot perfectly.
We decided towards the end of his set to check out the Nitrogen Room before Jon O' Bir's set as I had a feeling I wouldn't want to venture out of the main room once he started. Micky Slim was playing and played a great selection of grimey Electro-House with some of biggest and dirtiest basslines I have ever heard. Great dancefloor music.
As I headed back down to the main room it was coming towards the end of Eteson's set and O' Bir was about to hit the decks. O' Bir was one of the DJ's I was looking forward to most on this night, but was rather surprised with his timeslot knowing that his style lends itself better to a later spot. He followed on nicely from Eteson with tracks like Fake Away from Andy Moor. He also played a collection of his new productions and remixes including favourite's of mine in his Remixes of Paul Van Dyk's Castaway and Giuseppe Ottaviani & Stephen Pickup's No More Alone. Both these sounded amazing and I was so glad to hear them. Other notable mentions go to the amazing Anticipation by Lemon & Einar K, the new release for Coldharbour Recording's Walk With Me by Tritonal and Elevation's excellent remix of Majai - Phoria. The whole club was rocking throughout the set and every tune helped his set progress perfectly.
Above & Beyond were next up and it was clear by the crowed reaction who the headliners of the night were. They started out playing a lot of anjunadeep style progressive trance, which I love but didn't quite follow on from the more uplifting sounds from O' Bir, hence why I think he should have followed A&B. Either way as a single set it progressed relatively well, going through the progressive side of trance, into more melodic and later tech-trance. Some tracks which stood out for me in the first couple of hours were A&B's own Can't Sleep, the nice progressive tech track Chakalaka from Wippenberg, The Last Time from The Thrillseekers, Blueprint by Stoneface & Terminal and Adam White's classic The Whiteroom to name just a few.
The last hour of their set was filled with various classics including BBE's Seven Days & One Week, a cheeky edit of the Ferry Corsten Remix of Adagio For Strings which sounded spectacular and the amazing Get Off from Super8. For the last 30 minutes of so they played out all their own hits including Far From in Love, Alone Tonight & Miracle to great satisfaction from the crowed who sang along to every track.
Following A&B was Richard Durand. This part of the review is slightly biased as I am in no way a fan of tech-trance and can honestly say I didn't enjoy the set, especially at this time of night. He played a number of bootlegs including ones of Snow Patrol and The Audio Bully's as well as remixes/reworks of classics like Binary Finary's 1998 and Niel's Van Gough's Pulverturn, but not to my satisfaction. The constant beats and lack of emotion in the tracks didn't suit the time slot and I personally felt it was a bad move putting him on this line-up resulting in me leaving 30 minutes early.
Overall I had an excellent night and felt that most of the DJ's performed really well and most notably the atmosphere was spot on for the entire night.
