CD 1 Review

When looking at the tracklisting for this CD I have to say I was a bit sceptical to CD1 since it is not something you would come to expect from Paul Van Dyk, but after giving it a few listens I think it is a rather interesting selection.

The mix goes through a great amount of track in rapid succession, tackling all forms of house music while doing it. This could have been a really bad mix since some of the tracks are only a minute long or less and few are more than 3 minutes, but because it is mixed so perfectly it actually flows really well and keeps you on the edge of your seat not knowing what is coming next.

This is obviously a change in direction from Paul Van Dyk, but it is really nice to see which other styles of Electronic Dance Music he likes and also that he does have a interest in this side of the scene as well as trance.

If you like all forms of house music (including Electro, Tech, Progressive, Tribal, etc) you will like this as it jumps from genre to genre throughout, even finding time for some trancier elements from A&G, Genix and finishing on a cheeky rework of New York City by the man himself. However, if you are strictly a trance fan this is to be avoided as it is not ‘typical’ PVD.

In all honest it is actually a great reflection of the type of sound you could expect to hear when on the terrace for a Cream night at Amnesia in Ibiza and has also got me hoping that in the future Van Dyk may consider doing a set in here as well as the main room as I think it could be something special.

Top marks for creativity and for me personally a great track selection.

CD 2 Review

If you are a fan of Paul Van Dyk and his main room trance sound this CD should and will be right up your street. This CD is more of a reflection of what you would expect to hear from Paul Van Dyk in a headlining slot at the Cream night in Amnesia.

The CD builds really well, starting with the electro influenced Singalrunners Remix of Waves, but quickly going into the more uplifting side of trance Van Dyk is famous for. The mix never lets go of you and a peak time track follows a peak time track.

This mix is also a great promo for Van Dyk’s Vandit label, consisting of many artists which the label has championed over the years including Kuffdam, Giussepe Ottaviani, Jon O’ Bir and Paul Van Dyk himself. One of the highlights of the mix for me are the cheeky edits/mashups which are included in:Technosquirrels - Love Comes First (Styrofoam Kid Remix)/Paul van Dyk - Let Go and especially Mekk – Resistance/Robbie Riviera - Back To Zero, were Van Dyk combines the vocals from Robbie Rivera too the uplifting trance of Mekk with great fashion, turning an already great instrumental into a great vocal trancer (would love a copy of this).

The only fault i have is that he didn't play long enough of Pictures, but this is only because i am a big fan of that particular track.

Overall, This is a refreshing and well thought out mix compilation which has broken away from the ‘norm’ and tried something different. Don’t let the huge amount of tracks on the Mix put you off as although only some of the tracks are short, it makes up for it with the pure energy of the selection and structure of the mix.

Seen him at Amendia twice doing the closing set and I personally think that slot in that club is what suits PVD most because both times he was amazing and had everyone going right until closing.
