plus a million subgenres for all these and crossover tracks for each subgenre, and crossover genres with house and techno such as neo trance (melodic minimal)

some dedication there Anssi!

I will add my little bit:

The most popular styles of trance at present are uplifting, progressive and tech (not my cup of tea).

i think it's pretty accurate, except that..

- in reality all the bulls**t in the first two categories is just melodic trance. sometimes it's fast, sometimes slow, sometimes it's energetic and full, sometimes chilled and minimal.

- all the stuff in the progressive categories is usually just refered as "progressive trance". there aren't really such things as nu-progressive, semi-progressive, coldharbour progressive.
most old progressive fans hate the stuff people call progressive these days, and don't consider it to be anything like it's suppose to. so it's kinda imporant to draw a line there.
semi-progressive, well it's stuff that people call progressive, but in reality it could easily be just regular melodic trance if the tempo would be faster. and slow tempo has never been an instant definition of progressive.
coldharbour progressive, well it's no secret markus schulz loves deep sidechained basses. with the fanbase that he has, it doesn't take too long until many are producing tracks like that.

- also there's no such genres as deeptrance, darktrance or balearic trance, they are just descriptions/definitions

Wow I agree, good work there anssi, i checked a few clips out just ( just got to work ) and Im already wanting to go out woooooooo !!!

I think the sub-genres of trance (especially the sub-genres of sub-genres) are just generally used as a guideline to a particular sound, personally anything in the melodic/uplifting/euphoric etc categories and even a lot of the progressive trance I just keep in one trance folder when sorting out tunes, then i have a separate one for the stuff which is more characteristically progressive in sound and one for Tech-Trance.

Another style of trance which has been really popular over recent years is the fusion of electro with trance (Electro-Trance?) which combines electro-house style sound with the uplifting and melodic elements of trance – popular with artists like Heatbeat, Lange and even Ferry Corsten to some extent.

yes, but then again would you categorize a regular melodic trance track into a complete new genre just because it has a raw prrt bass, or a raw saw lead? like say "first state - falling" for example?

the whole electro- definition doesn't make any sense anyway, considering that this is what's really electro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXa9tXcMhXQ, and i don't hear fart basses biggrin.gif

Oh yeah i know a lot of fans of Electro completely disagree that any of the modern stuff which is labelled as Electro-House is actually electro, but that is still what it is generally reffered to as.

At the end of the day it is all electronic music so anything can fit under that term, even Basshunter...
