I have recently been working on a couple of pre-programmed mixes in ableton live, but I have come into a little problem.

For my last mix I was Ok as all the tracks where of a very similar BPM, but for this next one the BPM’s vary drastically and I don’t want it too just gradually increase in tempo throughout the mix.

So my question is how I can I change the bpm/tempo from one track to the next as when I try to insert a tracks with a faster BPM it runs way too slow ( I am guessing this has something to do with the BPM you set at the top of the task bar on the left.

I can imagine this being something extremely simple but after google searching to find out I can’t find anything (probably due to its simplicity).

Any help appreciated and if you need any more information let me know.

Why don't you just use tempo envelope? It gives good effects even with 10BPM change, which are not really noticeable for average listener.

Optionally you my want to do a quick shift using same method, it saved my life a number of times wink.gif

Do you have the warp settings set to beat when your mixing? You might get away with it using this method but if you've got it set to pitch (this is the case when using cd decks or vinyl) then this is going to alter the key signature of the music, so when you've got two tracks with drastically different BPM's they are not going to mix well together unless they were out of key to begin with.

I didn't mean to sound off by the way if the previous comment is aimed at me but if you've got two drastically different BPM's between two tracks then this is going to alter the key of the music unless you've got the warp settings set to beats in ableton. I don't claim to know everything about music, if I did I would be producing my own records. Again my apologies if it's aimed at me.

If you want to change the tempo drastically, here's something you could try out.

Click the global tempo box. Manually enter the new bpm (ie 140 instead of 130). When pressing enter, the tempo changes.

This way you can control when the tempo shift takes place.

Haven't tried that myself, but let me know it it works or not.

I have ableton back up and running now and i am still faced with the same problem as gradually increasing the tempo as the mix goes on as at the moment all the tracks are just playing at the set tempo on the top toolbar.

How do i go about doing this what you have suggested mate? i know it is a very noobish question!

Do i have to disable the default tempo or something?

What you need to do is line up all the tracks in your set as normal, and at the same BPM. When you have everything set and you are happy with your transitions, then expand the Master tab, where you will see a red line (just like track volume in each of your audio inputs.

To change the BPM, double click on the line at the beginning to create a marker, and move up and down to set the BPM. Do the same at the end, and you're done. It's just like setting the volume levels of your tracks when you are making transitions.

I have taken a print screen to try and illustrate what I am describing.

Hope this helps. smile.gif
