The current forum speed and overall instability is keep me from being more active. I'm on an 8mbit connection and it takes MINUTES to load sites. And that's a general problem.
Add to that the amount of down time. Either it's time to look for new hosting possibilities or start from scratch with a fesh database I say. This won't stand.

it is indeed a problem.
But most of the time it is not the case of our forum itself.
It is the host..........afik.

But Fly is doing his best to solve the problems

I am sat on a 2mbit connection, and use my gfs uni connection as well, and dont really see a major issue with overall speed.

The problem we have is that any forum software uses a lot of ram. We need about 1.5gig of it to run the site. Now find a hosting company that will give you that for $100 a month. Thats how much we pay.

And to be honest, the downtime because of the hosting company is maybe 2 days a year on average. The rest is because of upgrading the website, etc. Which I do in my free time, if i did the website full time it would prob run faster, be on a quicker server, but it simply doesn't raise enough for that.

Unfortunately if the website got to the point where it didn't pay for itself, which to be honnest it is always close to, I would have to look at the options available.

And i think if we lost our 350mb database the forum wouldn't be as useful as a resource.

However if you can find me a better server, or already know of one please let me know. But I cant afford to pay £100 a month for one. Otherwise this site would be costing my money. Something I can't afford to do.

The only option I have at the moment is having the site down for around 5 days, to upgrade the mysql software and php software.

tbh I think the original post is a bit harsh, it's never been that bad as far as I'm aware!

Fly does a very good job imo and works v hard even more so when there are problems so ease up man!!

It is very important for me to get user feedback on what annoys them about the forum. If one person feels it, so does a hundred others.

I however do feel the speed is much better than in previous forum software versions.

Downtime over the last 2 weeks has been as follows:

A week ago - routine maintenance on server housing, increased downtime due to power supply.

Yesterday - Unsure, due to the fact it came back by itself it may have been an attack on the server

3 days ago - forum unusable for 4 hours due to database backup.

I will be planning a scheduled downtime to update mysql software and php software, this should have a big effect on speed, but would mean a downtime of around 4 days, and may lead to a large number of errors. As the server would need to be backed up, and restored after the update. The problem is plesk is reliant on the mysql software, so updating and then installing off the backup may lead to unknown errors. Thats why It would be a major risk if i went for the upgrade option.

Any other downtime would be due to the upgrade of the forum software.

Just to load this window replying to this took me over 1(!!) minute. UKTA says it took: 0.1911 sec
It's the only forum I visit that acts like this.
I'm not trying to be harsh. I'm trying to shed some light on a problem I'm having. And I'm not the only one it seems smile.gif

On faster fox it says it took 7.780 seconds to load the page. Obviously if your having problems so are others. I am thinking it may have something to do with your cache handling. What browser software are you using? how much storage do you allow for temp files?

IE7 (FF is equally slow)
250 mb
Set to check for new version of site every time.

Anyone else having the same problem? Load time for this page was 2.797 seconds.
