Release Label: Anjunabeats
Release Code: ANJ-052
Release Date: Out Now
Introduction:
In terms of female vocalists in the trance music industry, the competition is extremely healthy. Ask several members of the trance community, and they will struggle to agree on an outright favourite, with Jes Brieden, Anita Kelsey and Justine Suissa among the frontrunners.
However, there is a new voice in town to test the existing staples, in the form of Carrie Skipper. Carrie first reached the attention of many as the vocalist on Smith & Pledger’s Forever in 2004. This year she has collaborated with Markus Schulz, providing the vocals for two of the tracks on his upcoming album Without You Near. But her main focus of attention remains on her own projects, yielded within the Anjunabeats spawn.
Rumour has it that the track “Time Goes By” was the result of a late night in the studio Carrie shared with Above & Beyond. However, the remix projects were passed on to two artists from the extended Anjunabeats roster, Super8 and David West.
Super8 Deep Mix
When the track begins the first conclusion that I draw is that it isn’t the typical sound we come to expect from Finnish producer Miika Eloranta (the beat itself sounds very familiar to one used by Kyau vs. Albert). For the first half of the track, Super8 lets Carrie’s leading vocal do most of the driving work, until a little vocal chopping and backing melody builds the listener’s anticipation.
The main melody that enters the fray in the breakdown is the more familiar Super8 sound. After the main chorus the melody builds to a rapturous climax, and the track is in full swing placing smiles on many listeners.
For me this is Super8’s best work for quite some time, possibly since the release of Alba. While the remix isn’t quite the full on hands-in-the-air style trance many would come to expect from him, it still packs enough punch that will drive a crowd wild.
David West Vocal Mix
2005 has seen David West’s star shine brighter than most. His main quality for me is that he can make each of his productions and remixes unique so that they don’t sound stale when one is played after the other, something that should be commended.
He is very articulate when it comes to the depth of layers in this remix, even the beats at the beginning of the track sound interesting because of all the activity occurring around them. The groovy bassline synonymous with his productions soon kicks in, followed by Carrie’s vocal. David utilises a lovely melody as the main driving component of his remix, one that is not in your face and is easy and soothing on the ear.
This version of the track will be favoured by those who lean towards the progressive side of trance. David West has done a fine job with the remix, and it will certainly please his close followers that he has delivered another quality piece of music.
Final Thoughts:
I have been completely won over by the strength of Carrie Skipper’s vocals in this track. It just leaves me anticipating further what her vocals will sound like on the two tracks on Markus’ forthcoming album. She has a very soothing voice, not forcing the high notes down the throat of the listener, reminding me of Sarah McLachlan’s style a little.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see her voice being utilised extensively by many producers and remixers in the next few months. To be honest, I find it difficult to decide which remix of the two I prefer, either one of them is very satisfying to listen to yet offers something different compared to the other.
A release most certainly worth buying, and another track to add to the impressive list to the Anjunabeats portfolio.
