Fresh from his excellent live set from the Inferno Club in Vancouver, Canada the previous weekend, Markus Schulz returned to the studio to provide a two hour set for the 28-07-2005 edition of the Global DJ Broadcast.

The broadcast kicks off with a breakbeat interpretation of a slightly old track, Tonepushers – Daydreamer – a very downtempo and chilled way to start the set. Next, we hear a track by Alex Stealthy, Able to Forget, which despite not having quite a full-on kick, blends nicely as the set gradually begins to build.

After a first play of Andrew Bennett's new track Heaven Sent, Markus gives BCML – Mr. Horowitz a spin for the second consecutive week. This is a track that I really like, a very simple yet chilling melody that is very cleverly crafted. The track has the potential to do well in the coming months. Coming out of Mr. Zorowitz we hear Zocalo coming to the fore, beautifully blended and sequenced by Markus here. For me, this marked the point where the set really gets into full swing, and there would be no looking back.

One of the best tracks of the summer soon comes in, and is another track from the portfolio of one David Westerlund, Larry Mountains 54. Compared to other trance records released this year, Larry Mountains 54 sounds so fresh because of the strength of the groove presented in the breakdown, making it a sure-fire winner on dancefloors worldwide.

After another play of the excellent Deep Dish remix of Paul Van Dyk’s The Other Side, Markus gives a debut on the broadcast to his Coldharbour remix of Without You Near, which for me supersedes the original. This version of the track is much more uptempo than the original, and the melody in the breakdown beautifully compliments the vocals. Quite simply, this is essential.

At the midpoint in the set, we are treated to one of the two new tracks doing the rounds by Jon O’Bir, The Promise. A very promising track that shows there is a big future ahead from the young GodsKitchen resident. Following an Airwave-influenced ID and another airing of Matthew Dekay’s Bad, Markus gives us a sneek peek of one of the tracks on Armin Van Buuren’s upcoming album, named Control Freak. While the melody is typical Armin, the arrangement and percussion of the track suggests that this is the track he and Markus worked on a few months ago while Armin was in Miami. An interesting collaboration if true.

We move on to the enchanting melody of Opticane – Valley Cruiser, still going strong after it’s debut on the 12-05-2005 edition of the broadcast. A triple dose of Coldharbour delight follows, firstly with a collaboration between two Germans, Hammer and Funabashi. On first listen, the track sounds a little too similar to Daylight, but it may grow on me after a few plays. The second part of the trilogy however is where Funabashi shines, producing a killer remix of Markus’ own track First Time. My opinion of First Time is that the original was too downtempo to be a successful club hit, but the Funabashi remix rectifies that.

For the final two tracks of the broadcast, Markus delights us with two classics, the first being a remake of one of my favourite tracks of all time, Nalin & Kane – Open Your Eyes. Markus collaborates with young Detroit producer Elevation for remix duties, and they produce a stellar remix worthy to stand up alongside the original.

For the final track, and the official classic of the week, Markus goes all the way back to 1999, with one of the most popular progressive tracks of that year, Monoculture – Free. The track was very popular with Sasha and John Digweed, and for me brings back memories of Ibiza sunsets.

In reflection, the set is beautifully constructed by Markus. One of the noticeable traits that Markus showcases is his preparation for each set, making edits of tracks to compliment the flow. The broadcast starts off slowly and chilled, building up to some more uptempo and euphoric numbers. There are some fantastic tracks played, such as both of Markus’ own tracks, Larry Mountains 54, The Other Side and Open Your Eyes. A set well worth checking out, and is one that keeps up the high standards of Global DJ Broadcast in 2005.
