One of the weekly highlights in the world of online radio is Markus Schulz presenting the Global DJ Broadcast. On alternate weeks, the show consists of a one hour mix by Markus plus a one hour mix by a guest DJ, or a two hour mix with Markus. For the review of the show in question, it is the latter.

The broadcast begins with an Oliver Lieb production, under the guise of the Paragliders. The track is typical of the Oliver Lieb sound, dark and moody. One of the highlights of this broadcast in particular is the number of mashups used by Markus within the first 40 minutes, living up to his reputation of being a “self-confessed studio geek” (it is believed that Markus made the RR Workshop vs. Ridgewalkers mashup in a hotel room in Romania prior to a gig).

In between the mashups, there are some excellent tracks, with Nile – Orange Line being a personal favourite at this time of writing. A typical Coldharbour record with a melodic summery breakdown, there is no doubt that this will receive many plays over the coming months.

The set fully kicks into gear with one of the hottest tunes of the moment, Funabashi – Daylight. Funabashi is a young German producer and has been signed to Markus’ own label, Coldharbour Recordings. Daylight will be released as part of Coldharbour Selections #7 later this year. A great tune driven by a powerful bassline yet simple melody, I think this will feature among many peoples’ personal top 10 tracks of 2005.

Immediately afterwards, Markus provides us with the latest production by hot producer David West, Larry Mountains 54. This will be released on the new Anjunabeats offshoot label, Anjunadeep in August. The reason I think this track will do well is because it has great crossover potential, resulting in Larry Mountains 54 appearing in many house sets as well as trance ones.

Further highlights in the set for me include Deep Dish’s interpretation of Paul Van Dyk’s latest offering, The Other Side, Above & Beyond vs. Andy Moor’s monster smash Air For Life and the latest offering from Max Graham, Does She Know Yet, available now on Lost Language records.

Of course no Markus Schulz playlist is complete without a few missing IDs, and the hottest one for me right now is a track that has been signed to Coldharbour. At this stage we don’t know much about it, but it is either produced or remixed by Noel Sanger. An excellent track that showcases a beautiful melody, a hallowing vocal and an electric guitar solo in the breakdown to die for.

And finally, one of the new features Markus has included on the broadcast over the past few months is a classic track of the week. For this show, the offering was the enchanting BT – Mercury & Solace, originally released in 1999, providing listeners with great memories of tunes back in the day.

Overall, an excellent set, well crafted and sequenced in typical Markus Schulz style. Definitely a set worth checking out.
