Introduction:

This would be the second time I would visit 53 degree’s in Preston for a goodgreef event, and after the last instalment with Eddie Halliwell expectations were high. 53 degree’s, Preston’s student union bar/club is a great venue to hold a dance music event, lots of room for dancing, easily accessible bar’s and the stage (normally used for live band’s) is in a perfect situation for the DJ.

First Thoughts and DJ Tylor Leigh:

I arrived at the event just in time for the door’s to be opened, tickets has been purchased in advance so the queue to get into the club was small and the door staff for once were very efficient so It did not take us long to get into the club. Upon entering we was greeted to the sounds of up-coming DJ, goodgreef resident and mixmag future hero Tylor-Leigh. This would be my first time listening to a set from Tylor so I was not too sure what to expect. For a warm up DJ her set was quite hard, playing more tech influenced trance with some more uplifting but tough trance sounds. Mixing was spot on and she seemed to be enjoying her set throughout, acknowledging the crowed which was still filling up throughout her set, and it was obviously enjoying the music she was playing. Highlights of her set were the awesome Mac Zimm’s remix of Substate – Horizon and she finished her set with a great Marco V mash-up including a handful of his biggest productions.

Scott Bond Classic's set:

Next to take to the decks was Scott Bond, playing a classic’s set. A great feature of this set was the fact that before the event took place Scott was taking request’s via e-mail to be played during his set, which I took advantage of, and the results of the request will be outlined later in this review. It will take forever to remember and list all the tracks that Scott played, but needless to say his set was excellent, and it was nice to have a classic’s set thrown into the equation, staring off with such heavyweight track’s as Grace’s Not Over Yet and Planet Perfecto’s Bullet in the Gun, it was obvious this was going to be something special, and when the chord’s for Gouryella – Gouryella came in (the first of my requests) the place went crazy, me especially. The only problem for me during this set was that I got positioned right in-front of the smoke machine, which insisted on pumping out smoke constantly, oh well never mind. The second of my request’s came later into the set in the form of Solarstone’s all time classic Seven Cities, which was pure hands in the air stuff, and sounded amazing on the large speakers, definitely a moment to remember. Overall the classic showcase was amazing; every tune brought back great memories for me and for the new clubbers in the event it would have been a great tour through the history of trance music.

Marco V Set:

Following on from Bond’s amazing set would be hard for any DJ, but next up was not just any DJ, it was Marco V. I had been looking forward to this set since December when I seen Marco at Cream, and I wasn’t to be disappointed. Opening on Red Blue Purple and keeping his set in the same direction throughout, Marco played a great but extremely banging tech-trance set, playing out a selection of his own tracks, Indicator and False Light being the stand-outs amongst some great tech-trance tracks Marco’s set did nothing to disappoint. Other highlights of his set were Wippenbergs Earth which tore the speakers apart and the Santiago Nino Dub Tech Remix of Hammer & Bennett’s – Language. One of the best features of a smaller event like this is that the audience always seems up for it, and everyone in the whole club was dancing throughout Marco’s set, with no seats taken.

The Second Room, Hosted by On A Plate:

After Marco V I decided to take a break from the main room and visit the backroom hosted by On a Plate, and a friend of mine, Neil Smallridge was taking to the decks playing some dirty electro house, and in particular the excellent Tocasdisco’s remix of The Egg’s Walking Away. I stayed long enough too have a good dance to the house grooves before going back to the main room to see the remainder of Lee Haslam’s set.

Less Haslam set and Final Thoughts:

Lee Haslam, formally known as a consistent Hard Dance producer, has changed his style recently, opting for a tougher uplifting trance sound. I enjoyed his set, and he played some great uplifting trance, which was a nice way to end the night, a lot of the track’s he played were unknown to me until the synths from Marcel Wood’s Cherry Blossom creeped into the mix, and the place went mental when that awesome breakdown kicked in. It was now verging towards the end of the night, and only the true fans were still dancing, the goodgreef owners took to the stage and thanked everyone for coming before Haslam dropped in the last tune of the night, a hard dance remake of Faithless classic track Insomnia, it was nothing on the original but nothing can take away the greatness from the breakdown on this classic track, and what a great end to the night it was.
