HK rarely gets any big name djs coming here. The last time was when marco v and Christopher Lawrence came in easter. So when tall paul was confirmed to come, the local clubbing scene was delighted. The venue was confirmed to be at a club call edge. The reason why a larger venue was not booked was due to the low turn out at the previous marco v rave. For a while now the HK dance scene has been worsening, the crowd turnout, quality of venue, sound system etc were all getting worse.
The rave didn’t actually start until 12, but by around 11 the que outside the door was already huge, a rare sight in HK. Part of the reason for the long que was due to the poor layout of the club, the promoters had put the cloak room right next to the entrance. However as I entered the club, the energy of the crowd and the dj hit me. The club was absoulutely packed, the club itself could probably only hold around 300, but there was at least 400 people in there.
First on the lineup was local dj Darka, the winner of a pioneer comptetition. Next up after him was another local dj David Lam. Although david played a good selection of banging tunes, he was rather static throughout his slot. At around 2am, Tall Paul finally came on the stage. Immdeadiatly there was a huge difference between the energy of the 2 dj;s and the crowd. Paul played a great set and the crowd loved every moment of it. When he played PVD-The Otherside, the crowd went especially wild. He finished his set with The Killers-Mr Brightside, which he was singing the lyrics all the way through.
Although the music was good there was a lot of probems with the night. Firstly, the club was too packed, it was very hard to dance without having to push someone out of the way. Secondly the visuals and lighting were absolute crap. At one point the visuals displayed said: Jimmy Van M, a previous dj that had come to hk. Another problem was the lasers, the promoters obviously did not take into account pauls height, so throughout his set he had lasers shining in his eyes. The venitalion of the place was also poor, you could constantly see paul wiping sweat out of his eyes.
Overall this was a pretty good night in terms of the crowd turnout and music. However like most hk raves, the setup, visual and sound system was terrible.
