Having been held on Fridays for the past years, Birmingham's biggest club night Godskitchen starts off the new year in a new night, with the launch of Godskitchen Sat'air'days, to be held every Saturday night now instead of the Friday night that past regulars have gotten so used to. Partly to accomodate the launch of a new club night in Birmingham called Ahead Birmingham on Friday nights. And what a party it was, as Godskitchen decided to waive all admission fees for the first ever Godskitchen Satairday, the Launch Party which boasted a lineup of local Godskitchen residents.
The 'no admission' factor certainly proved to be popular, as upon arriving at 10:30pm (which is considered quite early for a club night that will run through the early hours of the morning) there was already a short queue at the entrance, all taking the oppurtunity to have a great night out. After getting into the fantastic venue that is Air Birmingham, it was even more notable that the night would be a crowded one, as there was already quite a good crowd going on (usually at this time the place is still quite empty apart from a few early birds). One key aspect that I have to mention in this review is that the prices of drinks were increased - whether for the night only, or permanently remains to be found out. A bottle beer or Smirnoff Ice would cost only £2.50 a couple of months ago, but it was £3.00 on the night. The management certainly were making full use of the fact that many people are going to be attracted by the free entrance.
Chris Turner was first up - he was already hitting the decks when I arrived, getting the crowd warmed up with a host of club tunes. He certainly got the crowd warmed up, as when Petrae Foy took over at midnight, added to the powerful and energetic style of Petrae Foy, the crowd was definitely pumped and very energetic. The crowd has already built up to the point that there were hardly any space to move around at this stage. Spinning a set which somewhat resemble's Marco V's hard pumping style, it was perfectly suit to get everyone moving. Jon O'Bir, a firm Godskitchen regular's favourite, was up next when he started spinning at 02:30 am. Opening with Synergy - Hello Strings, he certainly stamped his mark on the night. With a much more uplifting trance like style, (and by this time it was already getting late, some of the crowd had already left) I certainly enjoyed the most when this young and upcoming DJ was behind the decks. Another notable tune that really got the crowd going was Kyau vs Albert - Made Of Sun. I did stop by the other rooms for a short while, but not long enough to enjoy it. The lighting effects on the night were fantastic, certainly some changes have been made by Air to improve the lighting.
Disappointing to say the least, that Scarlett Etienne who was scheduled to play didn't turn up and was replaced by 'some guy called Mark' which I suppose is Mark Etieson.
There were some other minor irritations on the night, notably the lack of security members and cleaners. There were bottles being thrown around - normally there would be security members making rounds, making sure that everything was alright, etc. The lack of empty bottle collectors also proved to be a nuisance, as the number of empty bottles lying around on the floor made it very difficult to walk, let alone dance about. Coupled with the larger than usual crowd, the number of bottles were higher too.
Overall however, it was a good party, although I wouldn't pay to attend an event in the same scale, but because it was free, it was all good.
Party Moment : When Jon O'Bir played Synergy - Hello Strings
Party Rating : 7/10 - Decent Night Out
Value For Money : 9/10 - Free says it all. 1 mark deducted however for increased prices of drinks
Lineup : 6/10 - Less than outstanding lineup
Music : 6/10 - Decent tunes played, short of spectacular
Crowd : 6/10 - Decent crowd with good energy level, but leaning a little towards being a little overcrowded
