IanFTW!
Here my makshift set up, im living with a relative til i get my new flat so ive made best i can at the moment.

the headphones

the brain of the surround sound, custom set up to 3.2( added an extra sub in the amps second sub line out smile.gif )

and the needles i adore!!!

The List:

2 x Numark TT200's
2 x Concorde Elektro's
1 x Gemini FX-7000 mixer
Reloop RH-3500 Pro limited edition white headphones
Cambridge Audio DTT3500 Digital 7.1 Surround Sound, custom setup to 3.2 for mixing(very good piece of kit i must say)
Creative Audigy ZS Platinum with external live drive, is a perfect set up with the surround sound and is manufactured with direct links for the surround sound system. Cost 500 for the pair brand new a few years back and ive never lost faith in it.

my pc is not hooked up at present due to space issues but its got nothing on it and will be used primarily for production and music stuff only.

its old skool compared to todays.

Amd athlon 3200 2.2g, 2 gig Ram, above sound set up, ati x1650 pro 512mb graphics and a few other little bits and pieces, runs like a dream and out performs all my mates newer dual core s**t heaps

as for software im still looking at what my best options will be once ive moved and got it set up and ready.

also got a proper DJ stand that set me back £300 but its still flat packed til i move.

Its the eginning of my journey so is pretty minimal at the moment compared to some ive seen on here

Hope you like it

Putting speakers in corners will help boost the sound
as well as having them close to walls

this isn't a theory, its how speakers are made, the way they sound best

stereo sound is designed and meant to be at speakers at 60 degree angles
also works best in a small room, 12 x 18 foot for example

anyways if you cared about performance verus price you wouldn't be using vinyls
or using vinyl for good sound quality at all
thijsje
Looks great Ian biggrin.gif

you've got to have the speakers set up right to get a good mix.

If you've got the speakers facing directly at you are just doing mono sad.gif

From yamaha's site.

For both stereo and surround mixing your position in relation to the main front speakers – the "sweet spot" as it's often called – should be one apex of an equilateral triangle. In other words your distance from either speaker should be the same as the distance between the two speakers. The speakers should also be "toed in" to the corresponding 60° angle so that the drivers are aimed directly at the listening position. The height of the speakers should be such that the tweeters are roughly aligned with your ears (this is because high frequencies are the most directional).

Also to get a good stereo image the speakers need to be far apart depending on what they are.
Studio monitors that are nearfield monitors need to be 3 to 6 foot apart, depending on how they are made.
Regular stereo speakers are designed to be listened to at least 10-12 feet apart, the farther the better, 8 feet is a minimum

hmm thought this was common knowledge among producers, but you eventually learn your speakers no matter what type or position they are in, for stereo imaging, and for those of us with hearing loss of certain frequencies, there is always analyzers you can use to see sound levels wink.gif

?????

maybe I'm just old, but I still love the character vinyl has, and prefer it over digital media for dance music
ectobia
Yeah its true vinyl has a type of warm distortion that is pleasing to the ear, and also the sound is more loud then soft, which is more gratifying

but i'm the type of person who wants to listen to the music as what the musician originally intended

well that's why mastering on the vinyl is different from the digital release (or at least should be)

as you said..its the warmer sound being emphasized...so I guess it does depend on what sounds are in the track...

one song that I started to love after having the vinyl is Alex Bartlett & Andy Guess - Universe Inside (Talla 2XLC Remix)

armin ft nadia ali - who is watching...digital sounds better...until the guitar comes in

Emery* & Kirsch* - Lose Yourself....verse sections sound better on digital media

but we can't argue personal preference smile.gif I just enjoy vinyl
thijsje
analog (vinyl) still sounds warmer than digital...

something which will never change if you ask me

but that doesn't say anything about quality btw
ectobia
i'm not arguing that its enjoyable

sorry, but its not possible for a vinyl to has the same dynamics as a CD

and you can't change the laws of physics, a vinyl can't do all the frequency extremes

for an LP to have all the bass, and treble from a CD, an LP would be 5 or 6 minutes long.

True they master then differently from a digital release, but 99% percent of the time its from a digital source.
So its like a copy of a copy.

And your right. I've heard some vinyls that some amazing, and the cd was horrible.

Sometimes its the fault of the record company, I known some that have the high frequencys cut off of them, and the music along with.
Or the way the CD is mastered.

Its become popular now to compress dance music, which adds lots of distortion, all the sounds sound the same, at same volume, It ruins the music, I believe this is the main reason many people prefer vinyl over cd

time to update my pic
i have a brand new set up i finally got a whole room for my studio so i am very happy

ectobia
Want to see something really cool?

This is my personal stash of tubes.

I rolled them from a 1950's tube organ.

I Use them for recording, and get that Deep Dark, atmosphereic sound, you can only get from a organ tube. smile.gif

the best part is ,I got the organ for $90 and it had 52 tubes in thm, I sold most of them off for $20 a pair
thijsje
awesome indeed biggrin.gif

oh, expect new studio pics from me tomorrow 123clap.gif

Yeah for sure, I've got a Mid-Side Stereo Electret Condenser Microphone, I use to record other people's performances, with it, and they all said it sounded good.

For voice, I switch to 90o angle and just keep it 6 inches away to avoid popping,

Then for acoustic guitar, You can rotate to so somwhere near 120o angle to record the radial image of the strings, and depth, about 6-9 inches near the bridge, depending on how the tone you want

Of course i always run it through my tube preamplifier to get better stereo imaging, and soundstage.

Maybe i'm giving away too many secrets here.
tongue.gif
I'll stop now
thijsje
haha, i already know some of the tricks to record guitar....
piano is more difficult

do you know a good budget pre-amp

Btw, you make me wondering how's your own studio wink.gif
ectobia
A a good budget instrument preamp = A DJ MIXER
this should supply you with enough gain, the gain on the out of the mixer + soundcard, will provide enough gain to record an instrument without a lot of noise, and a moderate amount of distortion
To get lower distortion at high levels a good tube preamps start from $400 and up
I'd recommend the marantz 7 clone

IanFTW!
Ok so here goes....

Ive decided im gonna stay put for a while where im living and the relatives have allowed me to set up properly.

this is how i had it set up but after a couple of days between work ive had a little play around with my set up.

I decided to sell the Deck stand i bought as i didnt have the room to have it in my room. My king bed takes up 3/4 of it lol.

Anyway, with the money i bought a new processor for my comp and am just about to order these little babies...

http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR194597.

Heres what i got up to at 8am this morning much to my neighbours displeasure i imagine wink.gif

I work nights so morning is my evening and what better than a few

to get the evening underway biggrin.gif

Moved things about to try get a fit that suits in the minimal space i had to work with, this is best i came up with.

I cut some kitchen top board to fit and raise the decks another 2 inches to a more comfortable height.

Then i needed to find somewhere to put my pc.......

My mum has gone away to iceland for a couple of weeks and had this sitting in her front room douing nothing so i decided to borrow it wink.gif

Tested it but it was way too high for my liking, hurting my neck when sitting down looking at the screen

There were some Cd racks in the bottom but being a vinyl man, i found these offensive and removed them, freeing up enough room for about 18 extra vinyl in all, very happy with this as vinyl are way more important than Cd's tongue.gif

Then i got to work with the jigsaw and a few nails

Then got all of it together and tidied up a little bit. and this is how it is now.....

Im very happy with the layout now and am now concentrating on setting the PC up for production purposes.

Heres an updated spec list from my last post

2 x Numark TT200's
2 x Concorde Elektro's
1 x Gemini FX-7000 mixer
Reloop RH-3500 Pro limited edition white headphones
Cambridge Audio DTT3500 Digital 7.1 Surround Sound, custom setup to 3.2 for mixing(very good piece of kit i must say)
Creative Audigy ZS Platinum with external live drive, is a perfect set up with the surround sound and is manufactured with direct links for the surround sound system.

And the PC

Amd athlon 3700 2.4g < my new toy smile.gif
2gb Kingston Ram
above sound set up
ati x1650 pro 512mb graphics

and a few other little bits and pieces, runs like a dream and out performs all my mates newer dual core s**t heaps

and finally just because they are ace and i love this pic i took(except the horrid border on the wall which is coming off in a minute)

Hope this aint too boring or too much posting for something little but ive had fun and am glad i can now start to get on with things a bit more.

Like those KRK's mate, I was going to buy them, but went for the Yamaha's instead, however, the Yamaha's are quite responsive on the high end, but not so much in the low. Do you get a good bass responce from the KRK's??

Here is our other set up. This is Power Of 3's set up. The 3 of us share this studio and we master here too.

Here's a tip: You'll never get the sound of a 12 or 15 inch drum from a 7" woofer, Physics doesn't work that way, the cheapest 15 in subwoofer will sound better than the most expesnive 7 "

And another , those woofers won't have thet sound of it, the conic s' rigidty doesnt react to produce enouvh of the right frequency
IanFTW!
i was recommended these from a friend and im not looking for large low end, these are for monitoring like it says on the tin.

im looking at buyin a seperate system for all out perfomance and need to look at whats best for my needs but these will do for now as i havent got the space for a larger set up and i dont think the relatives will be to impressed lol

tip 3: A subwoofer is very important for monitoring. For ex: Your monitors alone don't have all the bass response, so you've got too much bass in your mix, On a reference system the bass will muddy up the rest of the sound, even listening on a boombox, there will be too much bass, and It won't sound clear. Think of it this way.

this my sub, the SVS powered cylinder.

I had 2 10" inch subwoofers, but I was only getting half the bass from those.

Tip 4: As for the relatives thing, You just need to make some DIY acoustic treatments. In a small room like that, You can get enough for about $200 or $300, From materials you can get at your local hardware store.
You don't have to spends $1000s on acoustic treatments, You can build them yourself in a couple hours, the same thing for a couple hundred dollars.

THis is most improtant tip, you will learn its most important thing in any studio.

Will change the sound dramatically, more so than upgrading your speakers or amp
