im planing to buy a very good quality sound card, and i got a bit confused when i saw that there are audio interfaces too, for example firewire & usb interface.
what do you guys suggest me?
what exactly is an audio interface?
is it enough to get an audio interface only , or do i have to have a sound card too?

and another i was thinking about: Edirol ua 101 usb audio interface
or Maudio fw 18/14 firewire interface.
are these any good?

an audio interface is just a fancy way of saying sound card. the differences are 1) it's external and 2) it supports inputs/outputs that aren't the headphone jack.

since people with laptops can't upgrade their audio equipment, audio interfaces are ideal for them. if you have a desktop, then i'd go with the sound card. it has more available bandwidth and best of all has a lower cpu utilization.

whichever one you decide to go with.. don't expect to be able to use it for anything other than music production. unless it explicitly states that the card supports wdm drivers, it won't be usable by most applications.
