Whats the difference between Dubs, Bootlegs & Acapellas?
tsl
acapella =

from the latin 'with the voice'. an unaccompanied vocal - ie no beat in the background - great for sampling and clever mixes - used by armin in a lot of his sets with the Beautiful Things acapella

dubs = a simpler stripped-down mix of a track without vocals

bootlegs=

a record which is illegal because it used copyright material without permission. most likely to be a track using samples of big artists without paying them - eg Acid Elliot - Gabriel & Dresden

hope this answers your question

I didn't know bootlegs were ilegal, so thanks for the info.

I think you can get away with recording them on sets as long as you dont intend to make money from their use. its one of those grey copyright areas - as most of them are! - its all down to interpretation.

A dub is not always without the vocals, some of the vocals are stripped ... but not always all of them.

A bootleg is two records on top of each other.

Ralphie B vs. Airbase - Massive Rise (Bootleg) is a good example of this ...

does bootleg strictly mean 2 records playing at the same time? I thought that was just one of the ways to make a bootleg. I thought bootlegs were just illegal remixes ?? ; blink.gif

well.. bootlegs, in itself comes from people making tape recording from rock concerts dating back to who knows when..

but in electronica, it usually means that the artist didnt receive permission to use samples or what not.. like the afore mentioned acid elliot track.. or even cass & slide - glad i ate her..

spinning two records together is far from a bootleg.. and the ones i can think of off hand made it to an official release (i.e. james holden & ben pound - kaern turned, and tiesto vs. kosheen - hide U [or whatever the heck it's called..])..

There are hundreds of good bootlegs IMO, a lot involving For An Angel by PvD with some other vocal over the top such as Silent Angel with Delerium, thats 1 of my favs tongue.gif

here is my opinion:

bootleg = (watch the first reply of this topic:D), but watch this: a bootleg is not the same as a promo vinyl...

promo vinyl = a "promo" version of a vinyl, to check if the track(s) on that vinyl works in the clubs, if so, they are going to to release & publisch the vinyl on a large scale & mostly with vinylcovers (a promo vinyl is just a black/white piece of vinyl biggrin.gif)

a capella = the vocals of a track without the rest (beast, breaks, ...) and noting else smile.gif

dub = a specific style of music i think (dub remix e.g.)
