I was eagerly awaiting the return of the site. The forums Im not so sure now. Im guessing that this post will generate some strong opinions, then the owner will close it because of the debate it will create.... offtopic.gif banned2.gif

The new rules that have been imposed on users with no posts are interesting to say the least. Those of you who are obviously heavily involved in the site with posts in the hundreds are screaming to ban leechers, get rid of the bastards who dont contribute. ranting.gif What is the problem? Bandwidth issues? Once I download a torrent and seed am i not helping the distribution of the torrent? I think the real reason is you all believe that we who also love to listen to trance but just dont discuss it in the forums are stealing from the 'real' users. Come on guys......if tracker stats are showing that most people are really leeching ie, not seeding the file until a ratio of 1 then i would understand and in fact support your position.

Do you realise that you only have a handful of sets which i imagine have now lost swarm speeds due to this restriction? These are available elsewhere on the net also for free with vast numbers of seeds. In fact there is a site which offers FTP downloads of all the popular sets for $20/yr. Great value to me and no conditions attached. I struggle to convince myself there is a point to this idiocy. IMO by imposing this dictatorial law most new users will look elsewhere.

Having said the above maybe this community wishes to remain as it is for a small group of users, keeping a low profile in online terms. Why would you want to force people to do something if they dont want to anyway? I see the flip side though, this site being flooded with bulls**t posts to get access........ laugh.gif

If you are so intent on stopping leeching then why not impose a 2:1 seeding policy. After a week you must be a power user or be demoted. I would have been happy to do that for this site, even though I am not currently compelled to discuss music. The time I do have to use the net i wish to give elsewhere.

Anyhow good luck...im off to get some music hypocritesmiley.png

Fly
Well here is the person you think will ban you.

I have taken the action for one reason, and one reason only. The forum is not supposed to be for downloads only.

The website is a html system, its static, and doesnt use much system resources, plus users who use the website help fund the server costs as after they have leeched a set they click through via the banners. So i dont detest leechers, far from it, we are a downloads site, and its free. Most people, including myself go to websites to leech what they offer.

However with the forum its supposed to be a community. We had over 1400 so called members using the forum everyday and by the stats, only 1 in 4 was posting, and only 1 post as well. So as a community it was a total waste of time. The whole point of a forum is discussion. And that wasnt the case, people just came here to leech, they didnt help fund the server in anyway as click through rates are something like 1 click per 8,000 banner views. Which generates on average 0.4p per day. When you take into account the server costs us £600 a year work it out.

So i didnt want people to use the forum for downloading, but use the website to download, as thats what it is for.

The only exception is the torrents, as we already have a strong member database on the forum, i didnt want users to have to resign up to get access to another php system on the website. So i paid for a torrent system to be placed as an add on to the forum. So far it has been fairly succesful, and has helped to reduce our bandwidth costs. This is why its available for guests, no need to sign up, or post ANYTHING. You can come and use it without paying $20 a year, its just totally free.

On your point about websites with ftp access asking for a small fee. Well when you consider annually they receive around abouts $20 x 2,000 members that equals an annual revenue of $40,000. When you consider their server costs are around about $4,000 a year if not less, then you realise its very profitable, but highly illegal. We havent been fined by the uk music industry for one good reason, we are a non profit organisation, and only request donations to help with server costs. Yes i could probable put my 50gig set collection on a server and charge people to access it and make a mint. But i dont intend on doing that as we have always been free, and i cant see it changing.

So please dont bang on about how we ow you this and that, we offer what we do for free. And it personally costs me money to run the site. Money that comes out of my pocket, after earning it doing a hard days work.

If you want to go to other sites and download what we offer, please feel free. But just leave in future, and dont post stuff like this, as i have to waist time explaining all this, when to most users they realise we put in a lot of free time, and money into keeping the site online, and are thankful of what we offer.

Please feel free to start a simular website, spend hours sourcing and uploading new dj mixes, spend the hundreds of pounds on servers, and also manage them, and the domain names. And then let me know how easy it is to do.

So thats why we have taken the action we have, as in summary, the forum is for discussion, not for leeching music. Thats what the website is for wink.gif

Is it not true that many of the radio broadcasts you have available for download have their rights owned by a group or company. I doubt they appreciate the ad free sharing of their broadcasts, take the recent removal of ASOT from a well known live sets download site:

QUOTE
Gavin Kingsley, the Director of The Radio Departement asked us to remove all A State Of Trance (Armin Van Buuren sets) and Digweed @ KISS livesets from the ***** pages so we did. They have the management of the ASOT show and sites that want to broadcast the show must pay a monthly fee (like Digitally Imported does). ***** work with the artists and agents, not against so the decision to remove the sets in question was an easy one to make. Other sites that offer ASOT/Digweed sets for download will apparently be contacted by The Radio Departement in the near future.

What do you say to the above quote Fly? You say you are a non profit organisation and could charge for downloads but dont, if you are indeed out of pocket as you say you are then maybe you should. THe members of this great community should be giving you more financial support then. Have you all who read this thread given to the owner to help his costs. I doubt it. But you will rise to his defense against infidels like me....please

Truth be known folks my attempt at posting while amusing me served a purpose. I did not mean to say this place is not worth my time, quite the contrary I love forums and think its prob the best type of interaction with other people on the net. Its great there is a forum like this. I am a member of many other forums which are in line with my hobbies. I just wanted to try to put things into perspective helpsmilie.gif and to let you all know that the internet is a big place and what you offer as 'the latest and greatest sets' is not always the complete story.

Its no suprise people think like this to me.

I run a site which offers free downloads (all legal) and even offers the regular artists on the site free web space to help promote their work. And we still have people on there moan about we should think ourselfs lucky they use our site.

Some people just dont realise how much effort and money goes into sites like this that provide lots of people with a lot of joy. Until its gone most probly.

There are sites enough simular to Ukta, so if you don't like it here, then you're free to go somewhere else. If you becomme a member of a forum then first read the rules, sees how it works, take your time to meet some people before start attacking someone. Everybody has the right, that includes you, to tell his/her opinion, but sometimes it's better to think something over and act not to fast! I visit different forums each day, and be sure, here on ukta you get the most respect, so don't blow this up to much and have a nice stay here with us! biggrin.gif

Ok ill reply to this, just to again inform you, as you seem to think you know a lot more than you do.

With regards to the torrent section please re read my initial reply wink.gif I will quote it for you again smile.gif

As said above the torrent section has to be on the forum, but we do not encourage people to sign up, as guests can download and seed torrents.

Now, on to your point about the legality of the site, and the DJs we share sets from.

I have personally been contacted by a number of DJs who actively support our site. You heard of Matt Darey? He offers us dj mixes to share, as well as prizes to give away.

Bonzai has sent us prizes again to offer to our visitors. And also mondo records (darren tates company) We receive access to dj connections ftp to offer exclusive sets from their DJs. And i could go on. Something im not that proud of, but dave pearces guys contacted me and now have a link to this site from us.

Turbotrance our uploader also has exlcusive access to markus schulz gdjb mp3s recorded straight from his decks. So if you think we havent got the support of the biggest named DJs you would be mistaken biggrin.gif

I am pretty proud of what i, and our team have created here. And i dont mind dicussing that. So hopefully i have given you another insight into the runnings of the site.

We have also had interest from the large trance mp3 stores about affiliate systems, so the future of this site, helping the industry that we love, is looking very good wink.gif

oh dear. now we have leechers ranting. honestly, ive looked at the newbs that fly has granted access. all i can say is how hard can it be to give 20 or so non spamming posts. to the starter of this topic:

in the time it took you to write that, you could have been well on your way to being able to download again by simply browsing the forum and blowing off a few non spam posts.

In my opinion, writing in the forums is a very little thing to do to download sets. Dj's are artists and they do that for a living - they dont receive anything from guests downloading their latest sets. There are other ways of getting new music other than downloading... ohno-smiley02.gif

the post count changes weekly as well, so if someone told you that you needed 10 post to gain access then they were wrong wink.gif

We have also created a spammer group, so if someone just spams to get access they are placed in the spammer group until i feel they deserve to be removed biggrin.gif
